Bongani Mbambo, also known as DJ Phobia ‘The Funk Master’, is a blind house DJ.

He had eye cancer when he was three months old.
However, that has not stopped him from pursuing his dream of becoming Mzansi’s finest DJ.

“I don’t really struggle on the set because I happen to know where the vital buttons are,” he said.
Born in Bethlehem in Free State, DJ Phobia has been living in Ebony Park in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni for the past 10 years.
He does not only play on the decks, but also produces music.
“I studied sound engineering at the Athlone School for the Blind in Cape Town in 2004 because I wanted to learn more about music,” said Phobia.
He credits DJ Christos and Black Coffee for his breakthrough.
“The two mentored me after I met them at a function. Christos told me to study and promised to help me afterwards.”
DJ Phobia has shared the stage with Christos as well as Black Coffee, Nasty, Fresh and many more.
He is currently working on his first house music album, which is due to be released next year.
