Police stand outside the church in Joburg after one of their officers was attacked
THE congregants of Revelation Church of God in Joubert Park, Joburg, allegedly attacked a Metro cop who was towing cars illegally parked in a bicycle lane.
A witness said the cop had told them to move their cars, but they refused and told him there was nowhere else to park.
The witness said the cop had called the department’s tow truck, and that’s when all hell broke loose.
“Congregants prevented the tow trucks from taking their cars.”
The witness said the cop made a mistake by firing a shot in the air.
“Instead of being frightened, the congregants went for him and started to beat him up, causing him to fall down.”
In a video received from one of the congregants, the cop is seen ducking punches from church members.
Backup was called and police vans rushed to the scene.
Tempers were still high when cops and the mediaTeam arrived. It’s alleged one of the congregants had taken the cop’s gun. Police tried to search for it but their efforts proved fruitless.
The church refused to comment.
Public Safety MMC Michael Sun said: “We will not allow this attack on our Metro police to go unpunished. The culprits will have to face the full might of the law.”
A press statement released by Metro cop spokesman Wayne Minnaar said the officer was rushed to Milpark Hospital and the assailants handed in the firearm at Joburg Central Police Station.
