A MAN and woman had a violent fight that affected many people in their area.
About 130 of their fellow shack dwellers are now homeless.
The couple allegedly deliberately set fire to their shack and the flames then raced through the squatter camp, reducing 70 other shacks to ashes!
It happened in Denver, Joburg on Thursday afternoon.
The fire was only brought under control by the fire brigade early on Friday morning.
Angry residents were looking for the couple but they were nowhere to be found.
No deaths or injuries were reported. Emergency services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said they were called about the fire at about 4pm on Thursday.
“At least 128 people lost their homes. The fire was allegedly started by a couple who had a fight.
“The homeless people are being housed at a temporary shelter,” said Mulaudzi.
Blankets and food parcels were provided to the affected families and Shoprite’s soup kitchen also came to the rescue by providing breakfast.
By Friday afternoon, people were already rebuilding their shacks.
“This was the second incident in the area where a fire was deliberately set by people who were fighting,” Mulaudzi said.
